Meaning
Ever hear someone talk about something happening “once in a blue moon”? It means it almost never happens, like that rare event you don’t see coming.
Origin
And no, it’s not about the moon turning blue (sorry to disappoint). This phrase goes back to 1821 when a "blue moon" referred to the third full moon in a season that had four full moons. It’s a rare event, happening only every 2.5 years or so.
Use in Pop Culture
In the 2009 movie Up, Russell says to Carl, "Yeah, but it's way out there. I might see it once in a blue moon," talking about adventure. Little did he know, he was about to experience a journey of a lifetime. Sometimes, those once-in-a-blue-moon moments can turn out to be unforgettable.
