Meaning
Ever hear something described as "a dime a dozen"? It means it’s super common, easy to find, and not really worth much. When something is everywhere, it’s not exactly valuable.
Origin
This phrase came about in the early 1900s in the U.S. Back then, you could actually get 12 items, like eggs or fruit, for just a dime. Since these goods were so cheap and plentiful, the phrase evolved to describe anything that’s common or not very special.
Use in Pop Culture
In On the Waterfront (1954), Marlon Brando’s character, Terry Malloy, reflects on how he could’ve been a great boxer. But his brother Charley shuts him down with, “It’s a dime a dozen, kid,” basically telling him that lost dreams aren’t all that unique. It’s a powerful moment showing how easy it is to dismiss something when it seems too ordinary.
